What is a 'secure supply chain'?

The secure supply chain in air cargo transport was established to ensure that only cargo classified as 'secure' is loaded onto aircraft, thereby preventing attacks on civil aviation. This supply chain includes all parties and measures involved in the transport and handling of cargo.

'Unsecure' cargo must undergo screening before loading, such as X-ray screening or manual searches. These screening procedures are carried out by regulated agents who are certified by the German Federal Aviation Authority (Luftfahrt-Bundesamt).

The secure supply chain can be established for cargo and mail shipments, onboard supplies, and airport deliveries, as outlined in EU Regulation 2015/1998. Goods transported within this secure supply chain are protected from unauthorized access and tampering, and do not require additional checks.
